This year has been our first full year of schooling in some time, and as such, we can see the students beginning to fatigue. I’m sure as parents we can also feel the effects of the previous few years and the toll that Covid has taken. Teachers are very mindful of this, and are doing their best to be supportive, but it is in the yard that we most often see issues bubble over. We regularly discuss with our students the importance of regulating their responses and the strategies they can use to help them. If you notice your child is “hitting the wall”, ask them to self-regulate using the Zones of Regulation. They should be able to tell you which zone they are in and some of the strategies that we discuss at school to help them get back to the green zone where they are happy, calm, and focused on their learning. Some of these strategies might be as simple as taking a few deep breaths or counting to ten before reacting to something that has upset them. Most importantly, if your child feels like they are not able to regulate, ask them to try to remember to find a teacher or a supportive friend. As you read this, we have only 24 more school days until the end of the year. Hopefully the weather will start to be a little kinder to us and we can enjoy the upcoming events for the remainder of the year, which will hopefully spread a little more joy and enthusiasm to help us power through.
Infectious Disease
There are many schools in our network who are having a surge of cases, therefore I urge you to continue to be diligent with the Department of Health’s strong recommendations that students and school staff:
- who test positive to COVID-19 stay home and isolate for 5 days and do not attend school after 5 days if they are still symptomatic.
- who are symptomatic but have not tested positive not attend school. This does not include students with pre-existing conditions such as hay fever.
We ask parents and carers to continue to remain vigilant in preventing COVID-19 transmission. Any student who is unwell should continue to remain at home. This is about keeping students healthy and well in our school and reducing the spread of both COVID-19 and other respiratory diseases. Free rapid antigen tests are available at the school for those who need them. Parents and carers will be contacted if their child shows symptoms while at school. Students who wish to wear a mask should continue to do so. To keep our school as safe as possible, we will also continue to use air purifiers and other COVID-19 prevention measures. Thanks for your continued efforts to keep our school community safe and well.

Banyule Council Walk/Scoot/Ride Campaign
This Friday the 18th of November is the final day of our Walk/Ride/Scoot to school campaign. We will be celebrating the grade who has the most students who have participated in this event, as well as announcing prizes for individual winners on this day. With 2 school days left, we encourage as many students as possible to engage with our sustainable transport initiative and ride/walk/scoot to school where appropriate until the end the week.
Remembrance Day
On Friday the 11th November students and staff commemorated Remembrance Day. Students commemorated the noble sacrifices of armed forces and civilians during times of war. Students participated in activities on Friday and all students were able to make a poppy and bring it along to the assembly where the Year 6 captains were able to speak about the significance of Remembrance Day. We also held a minute of silence, preceded with a poem and followed by the Ode straight after recess.
NAPLAN Results
Recently the DET released the State NAPLAN data, therefore we are able to share with our community this years NAPLAN data. Please note there is no growth data available due to the fact that Naplan did not occur in 2020. At IEPS we have a focus on growth over grades, therefore this data is only a snapshot into achievement as it does not provide benchmark or relative growth of learning. We will be analysing our Teacher Judgement and PAT data over the coming weeks which will be able to identify growth. Once this has been unpacked it will be shared with our community via the bulletin, most likely in the December 5th edition.
The below data shows the percentage of students achieving in the Top 2 bands in Reading, Writing and Numeracy through the NAPLAN assessment. This data shows the following:
- IEPS is above the State (all schools in Victoria) across all 6 areas by an average of 13%
- Reading average of 20% - Numeracy average of 15% - Writing average of 9%
- IEPS is above our Network (the local schools in our network) across all 6 areas by an average of 6%
- Reading average of 9% - Numeracy average of 8% - Writing average of 2%
- IEPS is at or above Similar Schools (schools with similar SFOE indexes) across half of the areas.
Our Reading and Numeracy achievement results are well above state, network, and either in line, or above our similar schools. Writing is also above state, marginally above network, however below similar schools. We have been proactively having discussions around our NAPLAN results and how this will develop our AIP, as the data has shown there will be a focus on Writing next year and a continuation of the well established pedagogical approaches in Numeracy and Reading, making necessary adjustments as they arise. At IEPS we are on a continuous improvement cycle and celebrate our recent success, as well as actively plan for 2023 and provide the best possible learning opportunities for all students.
In relation to the mid year (Semester 1) teacher judgement scores at IEPS and the students corresponding NAPLAN scores, the below table outlines the students NAPLAN score in line with their semester 2 teacher judgement score.
Numeracy NAPLAN Teacher Judgement
Top 2 bands 52% Above expected level 54%
Middle 2 bands 43% At age expected level 44%
Bottom 2 bands 5% Below age expected level 2%
Reading NAPLAN Teacher Judgement
Top 2 bands 77% Above expected level 63%
Middle 2 bands 19% At age expected level 34%
Bottom 2 bands 3% Below age expected level 3%
Writing NAPLAN Teacher Judgement
Top 2 bands 62% Above expected level 43%
Middle 2 bands 37% At age expected level 49%
Bottom 2 bands 2% Below age expected level 8%
With a discrepancy of only 8%, you can see here that they are quite accurate in comparison. This highlights that our current curriculum and assessment outline and documentation is accurate and in line with the nations standards. However, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t a discrepancy at times regarding a NAPLAN score and a teacher judgement score. This is due to NAPLAN occurring once every 2 years, as well as it being in relation to an Australian Curriculum, when we are bound to the Victorian Curriculum and there are small differences between the two. Our teacher judgement scores are based on the work that teachers are collating, analysing, and using to inform their teaching and learning on a weekly basis. Therefore, with the upcoming reports, I implore you to refer to your child’s teacher judgement score with more emphasis then their recent NAPLAN scores.
Next week we will present the analysis of our Parent Opinion Survey Data.
Parent Payments 2023
Over the coming weeks, documentation outlining our voluntary Parent Payment contributions for 2023 will be sent home. We would like to thank our parents and guardians who made payments at the beginning or throughout 2022. IEPS currently provides learning support, four specialist programs, a fully resourced library, and a comprehensive curriculum that includes a full array of camps, excursions, incursions, and extra-curricular opportunities. In addition, we provide all the technology your child will need including notebooks, iPads, learning applications and other devices. Finally, your voluntary contributions also ensure that we can provide a school nurse program and maintain and improve our school grounds, which ultimately offers your child a safe place to learn and play. As always, we appreciate your support and look forward to this continuing in 2023.
The voluntary parent payments for 2023 will be made available via Compass in early January next year and a Compass notification will be sent to notify parents.
Environment Club
You may've noticed that around our Friendship Tree there is a new garden bed. Arley Hobsbawn led this initiative and did a great job involving anyone who wanted to help. A special mention to the grade 4 volunteers, as they were very energetic and engaged. It was inspiring seeing how hard the students worked to make their school look good, and there was lots of chatting and teamwork going on.
Visual Arts Gallery Walk
A shout out to our wonderful Art teachers, Mrs. Lauren Turner and Mrs. Jennie Alagiozidis, who have spent time creating an area to display the amazing art work that our students have been working on in their specialist Art class. To see the display of our students fantastic art work, please proceed past the office and turn left.
IEPS Green Day
Our Principal Advisory Group (PAG) has organised an IEPS Green Day that is coming up this Friday. Green day is a day we are going to raise money for nature-based funds. This year, we are raising money for a fund called ‘Bush Heritage’ which works with Aboriginal people to protect and restore Australia’s precious wildlife and plants. This day will be held this Friday the 18th of November. On this day, make sure your child comes to school dressed in green clothes to support fundraising and has a gold coin donation to give to your teachers at the start of the day. Hope to see you all dressed in green, with a gold coin on Friday.

Second-hand Clothing and Book Stall at the IEPS Fair
Keep the donations coming!
It’s now just 1 month until IEPS Fair.
This year’s Fair will feature both a second-hand book stall and a second-hand clothing stall. Accordingly, we need your help! Clean out your cupboards and your bookcases and donate your unwanted items to be sold at the Fair. We have already received many wonderful donations but keep them coming!
What items can I donate?
Clothing
- Women’s clothing (including active wear) and shoes
- Men’s clothing and shoes
- Kids clothing and shoes
- Accessories – scarves, sunglasses, jewellery, perfume (no empty bottles please!), handbags
Books
- Kids’ books
- Novels – fiction and autobiographies – particularly new releases
- Cookbooks
- Coffee table books
We kindly request that you only donate things that you would be happy to buy from the stalls – no old socks, dirty clothes or books with missing pages please! This will help ensure that we have good quality items that will sell on the day so there are less items to dispose of after the Fair. Please note that any unsold items will be donated to Diabetes Australia so will not go to landfill.
Where can I leave my donations?
Donation boxes are located at IEPS reception. We look forward to receiving your wonderful donations and turning them into cash for IEPS!
Any questions?

Dear School Community,
I’m seeking all of your help to ensure that our school library continues to be a fantastic resource for our students. We are very lucky to have a well-stocked library with an up-to-date collection and it remains my mission to carefully allocate our funding to align with the desires and needs of our school community. One significant risk to my mission is having to spend library funds to replace existing books instead of using those funds to buy new books to keep the library current and engaging to students.
Today I pulled a report that shows that there are 124 overdue library books (overdue by more than two months). The total cost to replace these books, including processing materials and time, is over $2,400. This is not only costly, but disappointing. Especially because several of these are new books purchased just this year.
It is understandable to expect a few books to go missing. However, this amount is quite alarming.
But You Can Help!
- Please pay attention to the “past due” slips and letters that are sent home from the library
- Take action by either finding and returning the overdue books or paying the replacement cost. Replacement costs are printed on the overdue notice. **Many thanks to the families who have contacted me to say they are either looking for the book or have paid the money for a replacement.**
Soon, it will become an even busier time with students finishing school and the festive season. I suspect that many of the students may know where their books are, it is just a matter of getting them into their bags and back to school.
Finally, a huge thank you to those students who have returned their books regularly over the year. Their diligence is greatly appreciated and benefits the entire school.
