Days of Acknowledement
4th of August - National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day
On this day, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people celebrate the strength and culture of their children. Everyone has the opportunity to show their support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as we as individuals continue to grow and learn about the crucial role culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child. In Victoria, over half of youths in detention are Indigenous or Torres Strait Islander. On this day we reflect on this percentage, the treatment of these children and work together to promote a more equitable future. This date was historically a communal birthday for those of the stolen generation, who were taken so young that they are unsure of their birthdate.
9th of August - International Day of the Worlds Indigenous People
This date was created to reflect on the challenges, discrimination and treatment of Indigenous People throughout the world. Within this reflection, we are also celebrating the importance of Indigenous cultures, histories and traditions as we work together to take steps in promoting and protecting Indigenous rights. The theme for this global date is ‘Indigenous Youth and Agents of Change for Self-determination’. The focus within this is looking into climate action.
Parent Teacher Conferences (17th August)
On Thursday 17th August we will be conducting our Parent Teacher Conferences through a variance to school day (Pupil Free Day.) Please note OSHClub will be open for the entirety of the day should you require these services. These conferences will run from 12.00pm – 7.00pm as a hybrid approach, meaning parents can either elect to have their meeting online or face to face. Each meeting will be for 15 minutes. Booking information for these conferences will come out via Compass on Tuesday 8th of August. Please note the expectation is that our Year 3-6 students attend these conferences. F-2 it is optional for the student to attend.
The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey
The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education that is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of families’ perceptions of school climate, student behavior, and student engagement. We encourage all families to participate. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
All families are invited to participate in the survey. The Parent / Caregiver / Guardian Opinion Survey will be open from Monday 7 August to Friday 8 September 2023. Individual Parent Log In details and information will be sent to families on Monday 7th of August.
The survey will be conducted online, only takes 20 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any convenient time within the survey period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in English and 10 other languages including Arabic, Greek, Hakha Chin, Hindi, Japanese, Punjabi, Simplified Chinese, Somali, Turkish, and Vietnamese.
The survey results are used to reflect on goals achieved in line with the schools Annual Implementation Plan as well as help create goals for our 2024 AIP. Furthermore, this data set will be instrumental in reflecting on our School Strategic Plan which is coming to an end and consequently will help direct our 2024-2027 Strategic Plan. Last year’s results are available via our Annual School Report which is available on our school website. This year’s results will be communicated to parents / caregivers / guardians through our bulletin and our annual reporting once the data is received and analysed.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like more information.
House Spirit Update
We had a wonderful end to Term 2 with the house captains and vice captains organizing and running House Spirit Day. It was a fantastic day where students united in their houses to complete a range of activities, make friends and have fun. The day consisted of 4 different sections; Art, Sport, Scavenger Hunt and Music. Although it was a cold day, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a great way to see out the end of the term.
Last Monday, we have had House Spirit come and work with the captains and vice-captains. They surveyed each year level and based on their responses are in the process of organising house events for each year level during lunchtime. This will provide an opportunity for students to unite with their house again and participate in an activity that is designed based on what their year level voted for. Students will be encouraged to wear their house colours again and partake in the lunchtime activity, which will be run by the house captains and vice-captains. More information will be communicated closer to the date.
IEPS Canteen Reminder
IEPS is powered by fantastic support from staff and volunteers. We’re placing a spotlight on some of the people behind the scenes who make things happen!
Meet Kim Hall, our Canteen Manager. Kim has been with IEPS for a year, working with hundreds of volunteers to help create and serve lunches and snacks to children.
‘It’s always good to have a chat and a laugh as we create meals and prepare orders. People can be nervous at the beginning but I always demonstrate what to do. It’s pretty straightforward and they quickly get the hang of what needs to be done.
As well as a group of regulars who help out week-to-week, there are grandparents who volunteer when they can and it’s great to see new Prep parents rolling up their sleeves.’
Head over to Instagram to read her story:- https://www.instagram.com/p/CuyDuBsP9UQ/?igshid=MjA3NmNkZWY5Yg==
Please consider volunteering when you have spare time (see link below, WWCC required). Or contact Kim with your questions - 03 9499 2171 / or email

Assembly Update
As mentioned earlier in the term, we have moved to fortnightly onsite assemblies this term. This week will be an on-site assembly in the school hall starting at 9am.

Infectious Disease
We ask that if your child is symptomatic you do not send them to school and we thank you in advance as we acknowledge that this can be challenging, especially for working parents.
If your child does test positive for COVID-19 and/or any other infectious disease we ask you contact the school via email Ivanhoe.east.ps@education.vic.gov.au and it is recommended that they isolate for a minimum of 5 days and not attend school until their symptoms have resolved.
In relation to Covid-19 it is recommended that rapid antigen tests (RATs) are used by students and staff:
- If you have symptoms of COVID-19 infection, no matter how mild
- If you are a household or close contact of someone who has COVID-19
- If you are a social contact of someone who has COVID-19.
Rapid Antigen Tests are also available from the front office, please don’t hesitate to come in and collect as needed.

Book Week Character Parade - Wednesday 23 August 2023 - SAVE THE DATE
Book Week 2023
The theme for Book Week 2023 is “Read Grow Inspire”. The theme is focused on how literature has the capacity to develop a child's inner world and how it can plant the seed of inspiration for them to express their own creativity.
The dates for Book Week this year are from Saturday 19 August to Friday 25 August 2023. Each year, many schools and public libraries from all over Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. We will soon begin this celebration in the library at IEPS with a display of the CBCA Shortlisted Books.
At IEPS we will be celebrating Book Week with a Book Week Character Parade for all students and staff. For our Book Week Character Parade, all students are encouraged to dress up as a favourite book character. Children are also encouraged to bring their book along to school with them if possible. If any students choose not to dress as a book character, they can wear their normal school uniform. Please note that the costume does not need to be too elaborate. We would encourage parents to use dress-up clothes from home for the event.
Parents are invited to attend the parade.
