Child safety and wellbeing at Ivanhoe East Primary School information for families and the school community
Ivanhoe East Primary School is committed to providing an environment where students are safe and feel safe. We have a zero tolerance for child abuse and are committed to protecting children from harm. On Monday we spent the morning of the Curriculum day working with Helen from Growing Futures focusing on the topic of Child Safe Standards. This was extremely in depth and comprehensive and highlighted the importance of all stakeholders working together for child safety. Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to highlight our comprehensive Child Safety Framework which outlines our school’s strategies to support student safety and wellbeing. The framework includes the following policies, codes and procedures, which are all available on our school website under our Policy section https://ivanhoeeastps.vic.edu.au/policies
- Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
- Child Safety Code of Conduct
- Child safety Responding and Reporting Obligations Policy and Procedure
- Complaints Policy
- Student Engagement and Wellbeing Policy
- Bullying Prevention Policy
- Volunteers Policy
- Visitors Policy
- Digital Learning Policy
As mentioned our students and their families are integral partners in keeping our students safe. I strongly encourage you to familiarise yourself with the above policies. As always we value feedback and ideas on how we can continuously strengthen our Child Safety Framework. If you have any suggestions or comments please contact myself directly via tom.boyle@education.vic.gov.au
Works on Wilfred Road –East Ivanhoe Shopping Village Upgrade
Works will be commencing in Wilfred Road from the week of 8 July 2024 as part of the next stage of works for the East Ivanhoe Shopping Village Upgrade. It is anticipated these works will be under way for a period of two weeks, weather dependent.
These works will require removal of existing concrete and asphalt, and placement of new pavement and kerb.
Council will be constructing raised crossings in Wilfred Road at Lower Heidelberg Road at a later stage.
Given the nature of these works, traffic management and pedestrian detours will be in place whist the works occur.
You may also hear some noise whist the works occur, particularly during the initial demolition phases.
A member of the construction team may be in contact with the school if there are any specific access restrictions occurring during the works.
For all general communications, please contact Council on the details below.

House Spirit Building Teamwork and Fun - Friday 28th of June
On the final day of Term 2, the entire school came together for a House Spirit Day aimed at fostering unity among students across different grades and strengthening their connection to their houses. The 2024 House Captains used their experience from last years’ House Spirit event to plan four new activities which could cater for all ages and large group numbers so that all students could participate equally. These activities included 25 minute sessions of yoga, Just Dance, obstacle courses, and party games.
It was wonderful to see such eager participation and wonderful respect shown by all year levels throughout the event. Special congratulations those who were awarded a House Spirit Award, demonstrating fabulous enthusiasm and support for all students in their house. Finally, thank you to the House and School Captains for your confident leadership, as well as to the Year 6 student helpers for making sure each activity ran smoothly.

Homework Policy
Our Homework Policy was updated in Term 2 and is located under the Policy heading on our website. https://ivanhoeeastps.vic.edu.au/policies
IEPS has developed this Homework Policy in consultation with the School Council to support student learning and wellbeing by:
- providing opportunities for students to review, revise and reinforce newly acquired skills
- providing opportunities for students to apply new knowledge
- providing opportunities for students to prepare for future lessons
- encouraging students to enrich or extend knowledge individually, collectively and imaginatively
- fostering good lifelong learning and study habits
- supporting learning partnerships with parents/carers.
Students will be provided with Reading, Spelling and Mathletics tasks, and these homework expectations will also be communicated to families through the termly year level newsletter. Families will also receive communication via Compass, if a specific project or research-based task is to be implemented.
IEPS understands that students have different learning strengths, preferences and interests and may approach learning activities and homework differently. If parents/carers are concerned their child may not understand the homework tasks that have been set or is spending a long period of time completing their homework, we encourage parents/carers to speak to their child’s teacher.
2024 NAPLAN Individual Student Report
Year 3 & 5 students will receive their individual reports this Friday via a sealed envelope in their school bag. This will provide a summary of the tests undertaken by your child in the NAPLAN testing window in Term 1. It is important to note that these assessments provide a summary of your child’s assessment on one particular day. Our school and teaching staff will use these assessments in combination with our school assessment schedule and the detailed knowledge that we have of each child to ensure that we are targeting strengths and areas for improvement over the remainder of the year and moving forward, to promote learning growth in all students.
Taken in isolation, NAPLAN assessment provides a small snapshot of the performance of our students, they mustn't be viewed without taking into account the summative and formative assessment that students complete on an ongoing basis. The evidence of learning that occurs in the classroom on a daily basis outweighs the score on a NAPLAN assessment. NAPLAN is used as a tool for our school to evaluate trend data related to our teaching and learning pedagogies and is one data set that supports our continuous improvement cycle.

This Year IEPS is participating in the MS Readathon!! This is an amazing opportunity to fall in love with literature while raising money for an important cause! Join our school’s account today and get ready to read from now through to the end of August.
SIGN UP HERE https://www.msreadathon.org.au/join/ivanhoeeastprimaryschoolieps
ABOUT THE MS READATHON
Reading can take kids on incredible journeys of discovery, awaken their imagination, and build confidence. It’s always a good time to help them find inspiration and motivation to pick up a book. The MS Readathon has been inspiring kids to read more for 45 years, and this August, it will be more fun than ever before. We have authors and ambassadors who can share their stories, incentives, and prizes to motivate kids. If that is not enough, all the money raised will help support the thousands of families affected by MS in Australia. We have so many stories to share about how the MS Readathon makes a huge difference to people living with MS.
HELP GET MORE KIDS READING
Last year Aussie kids read more than 181,903 books and this August we want to see more kids reading more books! Kids can read anything, including comics, magazines, novels, or read-along with audiobooks. We don’t mind as long as they are reading. Parents can register their kids for FREE. Once registered, they can log books through their online dashboard, earn badges, review books, and share their progress. They can also join a school.
KIDS HELPING KIDS
There are thousands of families living with MS in Australia. You can find out more about MS and the impact it can have on people's lives. All funds raised from the MS Readathon will help fund vital support and services, which include Help Lines available across the Country, MS Nursing, in-home care, speech therapy and physio, Family Fun Days including resources for kids. MS Family Fun Days are in huge demand, for these families it is a rare chance to have a fun time, connect with other families, with all the care and support their family needs.
